The Uniforms Arrived!

September 25, 2013

This morning the UPS man pulled up with boxes for Kevin and James. They have arrived a day early!

And, what better thing to do when the uniforms arrive than to make hard tack?

When I saw the boys in uniform, it gave me just  little glimpse of what those mothers in the 1860s must have felt.   I have read accounts, but seeing them in uniform, even if just to reenact, stirs up the emotions.  How did they get this big?  So young, yet so much more grown up than the last time I looked.  Would they ever see their sons again?  Hear from them?  Communication was nowhere near what it is today.  I am all too grateful that they are not going off to march in battle, but going to help people learn history.

We’re suppose to be going to a skirmish on Friday, living history on Saturday, and a marker dedication on Sunday after Mass.  Busy, busy!  Now, if only I could spend the next 2 days sewing, I might be able to get something done for the girls. If you have sky blue, gray, or butternut wool that you’re not using, please pass  it on so we can get John outfitted!  Thanks for reading!

James Turned 13!!

September 19, 2013

Announcement: We now have THREE teenagers in the house!

Honestly, most of the time it is rather enjoyable.

We made a cake for James’s birthday and he insisted on putting the candles on the cake. (I’m sorry for the poor quality pictures!)

Fair 2013

August 14, 2013

Ever since we moved here, we wanted to participate in the loca fair. It wasn’t until 2 years ago that we actually did. This year is our third year. Today we went to the fair grounds to see who won what. This is not extensive and some of the things we don’t know if they placed or not. The 4th and 5th place winners get participant ribbons. They were labeling items while we were there, so I’m not sure about a few of them. Anyway, here goes… in random order….

Giles Co fair 2013 023 Charlotte’s scrapbook took a first place and best of show!!!  (No on in the family has ever had a best of show ribbon before this year!)

Giles Co fair 2013 024James’ homemade puppet collection.  His ribbon is the blue for first place, not the white.  (Unless he also got 3rd place for something there?  I don’t know!)

Giles Co fair 2013 025Kevin’s “Helm’s Deep” from Lord of the Rings won second place in the model category.  Personally I think they should have a separate lego category as so many come in.

Giles Co fair 2013 026 Charlotte’s Marian shrine made out of popsicle sticks won 3rd place and MaryEllens’ decroated popsicle sticks won 1st in the small wood category.

Giles Co fair 2013 027James’s decorative wooden ax won 1st place in large woodwork.

Giles Co fair 2013 028Kevin’s collection of Lord of the Rings lego figures. (ed. to add. 4th place in collections.)

Giles Co fair 2013 029Jame’s photo of the soldier won first place in photo of a person or persons.  I’ll see if I can find the original photo since my flash ruined it here.

Giles Co fair 2013 030 Kevin’s Frist Place in Any other Painting (It was Acrilic and they didn’t have a category for that) won Best of Show!!!

Giles Co fair 2013 031MaryEllen’s horse drawing that was made into a plate from her friend’s birthday party won second place in marker drawing.

Giles Co fair 2013 032MaryEllen’s little figure won second place in paint on wood.

Giles Co fair 2013 033MaryEllen’s pencil drawing won 4th place.

Giles Co fair 2013 034MaryEllen’s crayon drawing with real grass!

Giles Co fair 2013 035Veronica’s horse and unicorn drawing

Giles Co fair 2013 036James’s face won first place in charcoal drawing.

Giles Co fair 2013 037James’s tank in the marker category (ed. to add won 4th place in marker and crayon art.)

Giles Co fair 2013 038James’c cannon photo (looks blurry here, but is not) (ed. to add 4th place in photo of man made structure or structures.)

Giles Co fair 2013 040James’s opossum in a trap photo.

Giles Co fair 2013 041MaryEllen’s wax figure won 3rd place

Giles Co fair 2013 042MaryEllen’s bookmark won first place in cross stitch

Giles Co fair 2013 043Charlotte’s fabric doll (sort of up side down) won 4th place in stuffed toys.

Giles Co fair 2013 044“Chip,” James’s prized puppet won 5th place in stuffed.  There was no other category for him, but it didn’t seem fitting.

Giles Co fair 2013 045MaryEllen’s cake won 3rd place.  It looked much better when it was delivered.

Giles Co fair 2013 046MaryEllen won first place for her skirt.

Giles Co fair 2013 047MaryEllen’s “biscuits”

Giles Co fair 2013 048MaryEllen’s pumpkin pie won 3rd place

Giles Co fair 2013 049MaryEllen’s green knit scarf won 2nd place.

Giles Co fair 2013 050On the right had side, you can see a little orange wax figure.  That’s Charlotte’s 5th place.

Giles Co fair 2013 051Charlotte’s covered lego model

Giles Co fair 2013 052Kevin’s big watermelon (21.8 pounds)

Heard at the Art Museum Today…

April 26, 2013

We were there to see Dutch Masters. James looks at a Rembrandt painting of Jesus’ face and says to me, “I like the frame better than the painting.”

Edited to add what my friend who went with me heard (she’s got the better memory):

“I’m hungry.
Can I go to the next room.
Look at that drunk guy.
I’m thirsty.
Can you hold me.
Where are the statues?
That guy has a big honker (oh wait, that was YOU! LOL!).
look at the cute dogs.
Look at the depth perception in that painting.
Here goes mom talking about depth perception again.
Look at the lighting on that – it’s beautiful.
There’s a ship.
Can we go to the children’s playroom yet.
Why do you think I would be good at being the drunk in that painting – I’m offended.”

Genevieve’s Baptism Pictures from James’s Camera

February 23, 2013

Here are some better pictures from James’s camera. At the end when we went to take the family picture, our friend Sharon ran out of the church to go get Vincent.  Apparently no one in his family was watching him, so one of the ladies at the church did. We didn’t even realize it until Sharon held him up to us in time for the pictures. These pictures are a bit better than the last post.

Autumn 2012

November 8, 2012

As you can imagine, a lot of things happened so far in this Autumn.  I haven’t used the camera very much, but sometimes the children get it.  Therefore, I have some random photos to post.

First of all, Kevin turned 14.  Speaking of Kevin, I believe he grew the night before last.  He was standing in the kitchen and I walked up next to him and had to look higher than before to look in his eyes.  He said perhaps the reason was that he had his shoes on.  We booth looked down to find that I also had my shoes on.  He took his shoes off and he was still pretty tall.  He walked in the room where we have the section of wall that contains their measurements.  We did not officially measure (we’re missing a big tissue box around here, an essential tool for wall measuring) and I could see he was taller than the last line which already towers above all other children an his mother.

Next, for the first time in many years we went to an apple orchard.  The camera was present and in my hand!  When I started taking pictures, the battery died.  Yes, I was a little annoyed!!  However, if you would like to see how the trip went you can visit Emily’s blog.  I have known Emily for many years, but finally got to meet her that day!  Also, please pray for her as she is expecting and we’re all so excited and happy for her and her family.

Another huge event that took place in October was James was Confirmed.  He took the name Tarcisius.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get a single picture.  I know some other people got some, but I’ve not seen any.  It was a lovely day.   There was a reception afterwards and then his sponsor took us out for dinner!  (Thanks Vince and Joan!)

Now, on to the random pictures.  It seems that MaryEllen took several of the following pictures…

That’s all that is in this batch!  Hope you enjoyed them.

James’s Nature Drawings

December 6, 2011

We have a book on wildlife in art that the children’s cousin sent them for Christmas, I think it was last year.  St. Nicholas brought a variety of art supplies last night, so James was inspired!  Here are a few of his works from today.  While you look at these keep two things in mind.  First is you may click on the images to see bigger pictures.  Second, my scanner only scans 8 1/2 by 11 and smaller, so some of the drawings have been cut off a bit.

The first one reminds me of something that my sister would have hanging in her house…

And James’s favorite…
